What Makes a Material "Medical Grade"?
The term "medical grade" refers to materials that have been specifically formulated and tested for use in medical applications—particularly those that contact patients directly or indirectly. Medical grade materials must demonstrate purity, consistency, and biocompatibility across their intended conditions of use.
Biocompatibility and ISO 10993
ISO 10993, "Biological Evaluation of Medical Devices," is the global standard framework for assessing whether a material or device is safe for patient contact. Testing is risk-based and considers:
- Nature of contact – Surface, implant, or blood-contacting
- Duration of contact – Limited (<24 hours), prolonged (24 hours to 30 days), or permanent (>30 days)

- Sensitization / skin irritation (ISO 10993-10)
