The past few months have been a whirlwind of stress and uncertainty for the U.S. healthcare industry. Healthcare professionals in every state are working to combat the coronavirus and protect Americans. At the same time, clinics and health systems are pursuing innovative new healthcare delivery solutions that enable them to continue providing the routine and chronic care patients need during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In some areas, healthcare organizations are responding to overwhelming challenges that have completely strained resources. In other areas, healthcare teams are immersed in precautionary planning and are making preventive process adjustments. Regardless of where your organization lies on the spectrum, you may be communicating with your patients much more than in the past. A common thread across every stage of healthcare’s response to COVID-19 is a dramatic increase in the volume of communication taking place between healthcare providers and patients.

A common thread across healthcare is a dramatic increase in the volume of communication between healthcare providers and patients.

Healthcare teams are leveraging automated communications to help tackle several new problems related to the spread of COVID-19. This includes broadcasting general health and safety related messages to patients and sending high-risk patients surveys to digitize health screenings. It also involves automating communications about appointment cancellations, reschedules and patient recalls — something that has become an urgent undertaking now that both patients and providers are converting many in-person appointments to telehealth virtual visits, and beginning to resume in-office visits.

On the Luma Health platform, alone, healthcare providers increased patient communications 37 times over, broadcasting more than a million messages to patients between January 1 and April 5, 2020.

The infographic below offers a look at some of the numbers behind evolving healthcare delivery and communication trends. It showcases a few key findings Luma Health uncovered after analyzing roughly 5.7 million patient data interactions on our platform that 300,000 healthcare professionals use to connect with 12 million patients.
